On Walking and Piecing Together a Place to Call Home: Adjustment (2023-2024)

"On Walking and Piecing Together a Place to Call Home" is an art project mapping my evolving sense of place from the day I moved to Montreal, to a year later.

“Adjustment” is my first draft of Montreal, spanning from August to October 2023.

I began this zine as a recollection of my first marathon and realized that I was too enveloped in the details of Montreal to take notes or observe anything beyond the city’s beauty. My first draft of Montreal barely used words and stuck to first impressions. I wanted to capture buildings, colours, flowers, and neighbourhood names.

Each walk across my first year of living in the city updated the sketch I had in my head. With every interaction, I added new associations and highlighted new locations. Like the photo map on my phone, Montreal began taking shape as not just a city, but a home. I hope the final five zines in "On Walking and Piecing Together a Place to Call Home" capture how Montreal transformed from imagery and found form with people who dispersed into my life, mundane events I will never forget, paths I discovered with time, and sprinkles of potential I have yet to discover.
